World Languages Night

April 2, 2012 By:Chrysalis School

Maravilloso! Fantastique! Sugoi! Wunderbar!  Chrysalis High School held their first ‘World Languages Night’. Over 60 people attended the evening filled with amazing food, song and crafts.

The Spanish students spent two days before the event preparing homemade regional cuisine. The night of the event there were additional dishes to enjoy like black bean and chicken taquitos, horchata to drink, chicken mole, goulash and two different types of salsas to savor and devour!

Not only was the food superb, but the talent was as well! Sara and Fiona modeled traditional flamenco-style costumes and Zach played Spanish guitar. Amanda graced the stage with a lovely Spanish lullaby, and Zane and Kyle performed a fun rap song completely in Spanish! The room was filled with beautifully designed artwork and crafts from Germany and Japan, France as well as Mexico and Spain.

Everyone who attended had a wonderful time talking, eating and exploring how hard our students work to learn and experience not just the words but the cultures of the languages they are studying. Thanks to Alison for organizing the food making, John for his delicious tortillas, mole and participation in ‘Jeopardy’ as well as Kari and Eric for their German, Japanese and French connections! Most of all, thanks to all the parents and students who participated and shared their experiences, it made the evening both educational and entertaining.

Creative Arts Showcase

March 13, 2012 By:Chrysalis School

We held our first ever “Creative Arts Showcase” evening! Students presented their artistic talents for their families and the Chrysalis community. It was amazing to see the vision and talent of our individual and group class students.

The evening commenced with dramatic monologues presented by members of the high school theatre class. The performances were gripping, funny and touching. Audience members were also treated to hearing two of our students share their musical talents as well.

After the drama portion of the evening, attendees were ushered down to the ‘gallery’ to view student artwork, photography and film pieces. The common room was transformed into a beautiful gallery filled with a wide range of artistic pieces. All the available wall, shelf, and computer monitor space was covered with incredible artwork, design work, drawing samples, fashion designs, sculpture, and student written and produced short movies. Over 75 pieces adorned the room and every student who participated can be proud of producing such extraordinary artwork.

The night ended at 8pm, after having over 100 people come and share in the Chrysalis community. A huge thank you goes out to Arts Instructor, Margaret Meyer, for managing the evening and to all the teachers that helped organize and prepare and participate in the event. But the biggest ‘thank you’ goes to all the parents, family, friends and Chrysalis community members that attended the evening and made it so successful!

Wasson, Lindsey | 2009 Chrysalis School Alumni

February 8, 2012 By:Chrysalis School

Class of: 2009
College: Seattle University
Degree: BFA Photo, Psych minor / 2013
Occupation: Student/Photographer

I am a junior at Seattle University where I now work as a photo intern for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (SeattlePI.com) and am in my 2nd year on staff for SU’s student newspaper, the Spectator. Last year I interned for Seattle University’s Marketing and Communications. I now freelance on occasion for them. Photojournalism was an unexpected turn in my photo career but has brought me a whole new set of challenges and opportunities. I was even lucky enough to win Digital Photo Pro’s Emerging Pro competition in photojournalism in 2011.

For the last two summers I participated in the Young Photographers Alliance summer program, which brings together groups of college photographers from select cities across U.S. and abroad to create individual projects around an annual theme. The photos are then displayed at Calumet Photo in NYC.

I’m also keeping busy with Co-Art Directing my university’s literary and arts annual, Fragments, and Co-chairing my college’s Student Executive Council. My hope is to do documentary work abroad in the near future and hopefully partner with environmentally focused NGOs in need of media.

Class of: 2004
College: University of Oregon
Degree: Biochemistry: Central Washington University 2008
Occupation: Doctorate Student: Chemistry

After Chrysalis, I started work on my bachelor degree in Biochemistry at Central Washington University; finished 2008. I then chose to study as a chemistry doctorate student at the University of Oregon. Currently, I plan on defending my thesis work towards the end of summer 2012. My research is in solid state/materials chemistry; specifically I use physical vapor deposition to create ultra-thin film nano-laminates. The generic goal of our research is to investigate the fundamental chemistry behind correlations between physical properties and nano-strucure. Afterwords, I hope to return to the pacific northwest and work for industry in materials chemistry.

Besides work, My wife Stephanie and I celebrated six years of marriage this year and are expecting a baby girl in late February, her name is Chloe and she is our first child. Stephanie works at a local day care; she has always enjoyed working with children.

The last year of a doctorate degree is typically very time consuming… I’m writing this bio at Argonne National Laboratory (southwest of Chicago) where we are running X-ray diffraction studies with the Advanced Photon Source synchrotron. Some year I hope to find the time for another hunting trip.

My advice to seniors at Chrysalis: be intelligent, you should seek further education but not all degrees are created equal. Have the foresight to see that your education will lead to stable employment.

Sarah Hurst Chrysalis School Testimonial

November 17, 2011 By:Chrysalis School

After a couple of years in another private school my son started to fall behind in a couple of subjects, besides hurting him academically, this was also beginning to effect his social interactions at school, and his self esteem. His school suggested that we get him some outside help so we began to enroll him in after school reading labs and tutoring sessions. Homework started to get difficult, arguments would rear up over misunderstandings. He seemed to be unhappy and struggling with the fact that his other class mates knew he wasn’t keeping up. We would have many conversations about how he felt he was “stupid” and how the other kids were starting to tease him more often about being a little behind. After multiple meetings with the faculty and administration we decided that the school did not have the proper tools to help my son get through the obstacles he was facing in the classroom.

I had also struggled with some of the same issues in school and as an adolescent I was diagnosed with auditory memory dyslexia. My own mother had searched for ways to help me, tutors and after school programs, special education programs, anything that was available to struggling students, but nothing seemed to help me. I remember feeling that I was somehow less than others, I was angry, and often wanted to just give up, which I tried on several occasions. I fell behind in school, almost a whole year, when in 1992 my mother found Chrysalis. My teacher helped me one on one, he was able to change the curriculum to fit my learning style and explained things to me in a way that I understood. I began to get a handle on the concepts that had eluded me in the past and it felt great! I worked hard and made up the year that I was behind, keeping that momentum I was also able to graduate a year early. After graduating from Chrysalis I was accepted into BYU Hawaii, another amazing feat considering the direction I was headed just a few short years earlier, I have no doubt that Chrysalis changed my life forever.

My son is now going on his second year at Chrysalis, after just one year he is right back where he should be academically, his self esteem has skyrocketed and he is happy, he is actually enjoying school for a change, and is definitely “sick” a lot less. – 1994 Chrysalis School Graduate and Parent

Class of: 2005
College: University of Texas, University of New Brunswick
Degree: Ongoing, Masters in Igneous Petrology
Occupation: Grad Student

After Chrysalis I went to Western Washington University and later transferred over to the University of Texas, where I found my love of sports and lost my inner nerd. I spent as much time as possible learning languages and studying abroad, spending two summers in the Faroe Islands.

I’m currently a graduate student at the University of New Brunswick, getting a masters in Igneous Petrology while my fiancée works on a forestry degree.

I’ll likely be stuck at university for quite a while, as at this point I’m aiming for a PhD. In the meantime, I’m active in several student organizations as well as playing corner on the UNB Red Bombers football team.

Jacquie Moore Chrysalis School Testimonial

November 3, 2011 By:Chrysalis School

Mike has worked as a professional actor since the age of 8. He literally “grew up” on the stage at the Village Theater.

In our house we encourage our children to go further than just asking ‘why?’…..we encourage them to ask “why NOT?” and then help them pursue their dreams and passions at the same time as working on their academia. We believe that a World view fosters empathy, understanding and a belief that they can create change in the world.

While dreams and passions fuel the fire, academics give the knowledge and understanding of how to make change happen. At Chrysalis Mike has been honored in his passion while being given a very rigorous academic schedule to encourage and feed his need for knowledge.
Mike was recently in the feature film World’s Greatest Dad starring Robin Williams. The staff at Chrysalis have allowed him time to go on auditions and work on set during filming of various projects. He most recently performed at the Village Theaters Fund Raising Luncheon for the Kidstage programs – a gig he willingly volunteers for every year.

He also loves traveling. He has been to Machu Picchu and Patagonia. He recently traveled to Spain for a home stay Spanish immersion program the month of June and will be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with his Dad in late January of 2010. Again, without being enrolled in Chrysalis, these life-altering trips would not be possible.

As parents, we would not settle for anything less in a school than one that applies the same philosophy we do here at home. These children are the future of our world. We need to honor them, believe in them and hold them up to as high a standard as is possible. They will truly rise if they are allowed the freedom to believe in themselves (i.e. follow their dreams or passions) and if they are given the tools with which to continue learning throughout their lives (i.e. challenging course studies and supportive teachers)” -Jacquie Moore
