In December, Erin’s biology class learned how to tie several fishing flies from Chrysalis student, Peter Anderson. Before tying a fly, fly fishers must know about fish feeding and territory behaviors as well as insect life cycles. Peter taught the class how to tie a midge dry fly called the Griffith’s Gnat and the ever popular Woolly Bugger, which is a wet fly or streamer. The class completed this project in two class periods.

Peter enjoys spending time in many outdoor activities. Fly fishing is one of his favorites. He recently built his own fly rods. Thanks for teaching us Peter!

Ecosystems

September 18, 2013 By:Alison McNee

Currently the Honors Biology class is studying ecology, which is the study of organisms and the environment.  This is such a big topic that it is often difficult to do labs in class.  For example, we can’t got visit an African savanna.  Our solution was to bring the outdoors in by creating model ecosystems.  Each student or pair created two ecosystems which were identical, except one contained a common pollutant and the other didn’t.  Students got to build their models from scratch and choose what went in them.  We’ll observe them over the coming weeks and study how the presence of modern pollutants can affect an entire ecosystem.

Psychology Guest Speaker

April 30, 2013 By:Alison McNee

At Chrysalis, we love to have guest speakers come in and complement our teaching.  On Monday, April 29th, we welcomed Patty Putnam, from Northwest Family Life Learning and Counseling Center to speak with the group psychology class.  The class is learning about treatment/therapy and it was great to have a working expert come into the classroom to finish the unit.  Primarily, Patty answered questions from students over what life is like as a counselor, discussed when it is a good idea to get counseling, alongside how to decide when someone has found the right fit with a counselor. The students enjoyed having her there. She was very informative and we appreciated her coming in.

Puppy Update!

March 4, 2013 By:Alison McNee

Wondering how our Guide Dogs are doing?

Yannah and Yuri, are 6 months old already! Time flies when you have puppies to train. The pups recently had their first quarterly evaluation with Guide Dogs For The Blind. The evaluation looked at their basic obedience skills, behavior in public and also a questionnaire about their behavior in the home. This training took place in a both a cafe and downtown Woodinville. The puppies are progressing along nicely and they are learning a lot! Their next 6 months will be working on more advanced obedience skills, and longer outings in busier places (like malls and busy parks).

How are the puppies spending their days?

The puppies spend their school day getting lots of attention and learning good manners. Being at a school provides a perfect atmosphere for impulse control because there are always students walking past.

What are the students learning?

The students are learning they have their work cut out for them. Time management is a very important skill they have been learning.  Puppies need to have a schedule so they know when they will have potty breaks, that way they can avoid accidents.  Balancing school, outside activities and puppy raising takes practice too. Being responsible for another living being is not easy. Although this class is hard work, our puppy trainers are enjoying it. They are doing a great job!

We hope to add more puppies to our program in the coming year, so let us know if you’d be interested in raising a Guide Dog puppy!
