How to Learn

February 26, 2014 By:Chrysalis School

Research: Journalist Katrina Schwartz recently posed the question, “What would be a radically different vision of school?” She notes that with the growth of technology people will be expected to manage massive amounts of information since everything is at their fingertips. In such an age she suggests that the most important thing students should taught is how to learn as opposed to what to learn, “especially since the content or specific skills needed in the future are as yet unknown.”

Practice: Our teachers are skilled at discerning a student’s learning style to both teach to it and about it. Understanding one’s learning style is empowering–it informs how you take in information and expands the ways you can express what you know. These days it’s important to know where to access information, how to determine its validity, and be able to think critically and creatively about it.

Blended Learning

February 12, 2014 By:Chrysalis School

Research: Much of the research on schools focuses on finding a solution that will solve the educational system’s woes. Among the most prominent ideas being promoted right now are “blended learning,” “flipped classrooms,” “STEM programs,” and other innovative solutions. Policymakers continue to hope that the implementation of one or more of these trends will serve as the magic bullet to improve educational outcomes for all students.

Practice: What’s missing is the personal nature of the learning process. We know we can’t prescribe the same solution for all kids. What works for one student could be detrimental to another. In reality, none of the solutions being discussed are a cure-all and shouldn’t be treated as such. That’s where an individualized program is so incredibly powerful. We can meet the needs of every student when we account for their individual strengths, needs, and interests to develop a personalized program that incorporates the models that a student would most benefit from.

Deep Learning

February 5, 2014 By:Chrysalis School

Research: A new report highlights the need to promote “deep learning” in schools to respond to the needs of the global workplace where “creative, connected, and collaborative life-long problem solvers” are in demand. It argues that this cannot happen unless schools truly reflect what works, citing the following as best practices in education: establishing teachers and students as co-learners, long-term cross-curricular tasks, greater student control and choice, continuous feedback and formative assessment, and greater understanding of the learning process.

Practice: At Chrysalis these practices have been in place for more than thirty years. We base everything we do on our own set of best practices, which stem from continuous research into child development, psychology, education policy, and the brain, in addition to knowledge gleaned from our years of experience. Our dedication to research results in the ability to adapt and encourage innovation in the quest to achieve such deep learning.

Chrysalis School Review, Shelley Svien

November 26, 2013 By:Chrysalis School

Chrysalis is more than a school, it is a community and one that my son loved being a part of every day.

My son was a senior at Chrysalis High School this year and passed away from a seizure. I will be forever grateful to Chrysalis for changing our lives. Let me share why.

My son had a non-verbal learning disability, Asperger’s and was his quirky, loving self. He definitely marched to his own beat. We found Chrysalis when he was in the sixth grade and it changed our life. He went from being an outcast to having true friends that spent lunch time and weekends together. He went from doubting everything he did to having confidence and couldn’t wait to be out on his own. He went from hating school to setting his alarm to make sure he was the first one at school in the morning. He went from feeling like a failure to setting goals to finish Calculus before he graduated. He went from not feeling like he had a voice to being completely confident in sharing his opinion, and boy did he! He went from being sad to being happy with a huge smile on his face every day. He truly blossomed. Having my son attend Chrysalis was the best decision I ever made.

Chrysalis used my son’s interests to help him learn. He had a hard time grasping Physics. His teacher knew that he loved to videotape and incorporated this into his teaching. They would research the various topics then have a debate which my son videotaped and narrated. He couldn’t wait to go to class! English was a struggle for my son. His teacher knew that he loved computers and spent all of his free time playing Facebook games. To help him learn vocabulary, part of his homework was to play vocabulary computer games which he continued to play just for fun.

Chrysalis made modifications that were conducive for my son’s learning style. Although my son excelled at Math, reading comprehension was difficult. Chrysalis modified all of his other subjects to accommodate for this. His teachers went to libraries, online, etc. searching for the right books, activities, lessons so that he could continue to learn in a way that he could understand. His English teacher would provide an ebook as well as an audio version so that he could listen and read along at the same time. For the first time ever, English became one of his favorite subjects!

Chrysalis ensured that my son was always part of the group. My son liked to be alone, however, the teachers at Chrysalis made sure that everyone was included and a part of the community. They encouraged and fostered an environment where every student was part of a group. The teachers would provide opportunities for social interaction and friendships by bringing students together through games and conversation. This is how my son made lasting friendships. For any parent whose child has a difficult time making friends, this was the most wonderful gift.

Chrysalis went above and beyond to give my son confidence. My son was in a small sociology class which was great for him socially. He had a lot of anxiety over it and didn’t always understand the group class assignments. My son talked to the teacher about this and to help him succeed, she met with him prior to class to go through the assignment, explain what they would be discussing during class so that he felt prepared and could contribute with the rest of his peers.

From a personal perspective, the Chrysalis community has been a pillar of support to me. The principal, teachers, students and families helped put together my son’s Celebration of Life service which was held at the school in his honor. It was an amazing tribute.

Thank you Chrysalis for being a part of my son’s life – for accepting him for who he was, encouraging him to reach for the stars, giving him friendships that made my heart swell and providing a safe and nurturing learning environment. I will be forever grateful.

MacKay, Andy | 2010 Chrysalis School Alumni

Andy MacKayClass of: 2010
College: University of Kansas
Degree: BGS English, Journalism minor/2014
Occupation: Student/Radio DJ

After graduating from Chrysalis, I started a new journey by choosing to attend the University of Kansas. I had a difficult time adjusting to college life freshman year, so I came home for a semester and attended Bellevue Community College before going back to Kansas.

Last summer, I interned at 710 ESPN Radio in downtown Seattle, which was an awesome experience for me. I mainly edited audio from the broadcast, but also met a lot of cool people like former Mariner Jay Buhner.

I am currently a junior working on getting my BGS in English with a Creative Writing emphasis along with minoring in Journalism. I got involved with the school radio station, 90.7 KJHK, the spring of 2012 and have been working there since. I started off as a regular rotation DJ but now am the host of a special program for the station called Hip-Hop Hype.

When I am done with school, I hope to work as a writer for a sports or music magazine. If that doesn’t work out, I would like to work for a sports or music radio station in Seattle.

Fitness and Nutrition Expert, Joe Bauer

October 23, 2012 By:Chrysalis School

Pizza, Goals, Soda – This was spelled out across the white board today in the 9th grade class meeting. Fitness and nutrition expert, Joe Bauer, stressed the importance of knowing what’s in the food we put into our bodies and knowing the appropriate times to eat it. Joe broke down the components of pizza into a fats, carbohydrates and proteins. He described how each work within the body and explained that people should not be afraid to eat these foods as long as they have a balance with exercise.

The students were engaged and interactive, asking excellent questions the entire time. We appreciate Joe taking the time to come Chrysalis to educate us.

Thank you, Joe! We look forward to having you back.
