Service Learning

October 12, 2012 By:Alison McNee

Each week, our service learning class leaves campus to explore different organizations. The students volunteer their time while learning about the importance of giving back in their community. This week, they started their three week stint with the American Cancer Society.  The Volunteer Coordinator graciously explained the importance of American Cancer Society, while letting the kids design their own (fake) fundraiser. This experience installed the importance of being involved with non-profit organizations while showing how enjoyable volunteering can be. The next two weeks will be about rolling up their sleeves and working on the DeterminNation campaign – This campaign is about encouraging people to join a team of runners, to run the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon in Arizona, while raising funds to support cancer research.

We will be recounting our experience as the weeks continue – make sure to check back in.

This Is Not an Implementation Dip. It’s Just Bad Practice!

October 10, 2012 By:Alison McNee

Education Week posted a great article, This Is Not an Implementation Dip. It’s Just Bad Practice! , on how the public school systems implements standardized tests. It discusses how testing has become about money and bragging rights, rather than how students learn. “Education should be about learning, educational resources and building relationships with students and families. It should not be about testing.”

Get To Know Us…

October 3, 2012 By:Alison McNee

Name: Jennifer Reif, Drama Teacher

How long have you been working at Chrysalis: Since January (2012)

What is your favorite activity outside of Chrysalis: Going to the theatre and outdoor activities (cycling, hiking, camping…)

What’s your favorite student success story (This could be a current student or a past student): In my short time at Chrysalis, I love hearing how students come out of their shells while participating in drama. Last year I had a group of students who were really having a challenging time focusing. We worked and worked on creating an ensemble, communicating, collaborating and sharing our creativity. At times it seemed an exercise in futility. Our spring improv performance was drawing near. I didn’t even know if the kids would show up. They did. They came together as an ensemble. They communicated on stage. They willingly shared their creativity. And they were awesome!!!

What’s one thing people don’t know about you (this can include places you’ve traveled, hidden talents, athletic ability, etc): I have done many sprint triathlons. In addition to teaching drama, I have been a professional actress for many years and also co-founded SecondStory Repertory Theatre.

Christian Niccum

August 8, 2012 By:Chrysalis School

1997 Graduate
Luge
2006, 2010 Olympics

In the summer of 1990 Christian was scouted at a USA Luge youth screening camp held near his home in Seattle, Washington. It didn’t take long for the US Luge Association coaches to recognize his athletic potential and in short order Christian was on his way to Lake Placid, NY to get on the ice. Little did he know at the time that Lake Placid would become a second home for the next fifteen years.

Christian quickly moved his way up the ranks of young sliders, not only in the US, but around the world. He went on to win four consecutive World Jr. Champion titles en route to becoming one of the USA’s most decorated young sliders. Transitioning to the senior circuit, Christian continued to make his way to the podium, winning six international World Cup medals. In 1998, he narrowly missed an Olympic team birth and stood by to watch his teammates win the first ever US Olympic luge medals.

By then, having spent the better part of his life living on the road on the luge circuit, Christian took two seasons off from competitive sliding and took up coaching while he refocused on his on future and goals. The medal winning performance of his former teammates in Salt Lake City in 2002 inspired Christian to come back to competitive sliding and the time spent coaching provided him a sharpened eye with which to refine his own skills. In 2006, he made his Olympic debut and has since continued to climb the sliding ranks. He finished sixth in the Men’s Doubles event during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.
